America's Kids are Deficient in Key Nutrients
A recent report from the American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Nutrition cites an increasing number of children and adolescents suffer from an inadequate intake of calcium, a nutrient essential to bone growth and density¹. Other research found 42 percent of adolescents had insufficient vitamin D levels, another nutrient key to bone growth and density².
Helping prevent this growing concern actually begins in childhood with kid-friendly foods. While foods like salmon and cod liver oil undoubtedly provide nutrients crucial to building strong bones, a quick-to-fix cereal breakfast fortified with both calcium and vitamin D is an easy and tasty way to get kids on the right nutritional path – both in the morning and as part of a healthy lifestyle.
Falling Short…
Another recent study showed children are not getting enough calcium and vitamin D from the foods they choose. Among kids aged 6-12, six out of ten are not getting the recommended amount of calcium, and five out of ten are not getting the recommended amount of vitamin D³.
“Maintaining adequate calcium and vitamin D intake during childhood and adolescence is necessary for the development of peak bone mass, which may be important in reducing the risk of fractures and osteoporosis later in life,” notes Kathleen Zelman, MPH, RD/LD.
Studies also show that adults are not leading by example, as many Americans are not meeting the recommendations for vitamin D. Teenage girls and adult women are especially likely to have inadequate vitamin D intakes4.
“Because of the influence of the family’s diet on the diet of children and adolescents, adequate calcium and vitamin D intake by all members of the family is very important in ensuring long-term bone health,” added Zelman.

Oyaco Products Inc.: Keep Baby Safe as Summer Temperatures Soar
With high summer time temperatures fast approaching Canadian homes, the grobag egg™ digital room thermometer is ideal for parents to keep the temperature in baby's rooms under control.
"It is extremely important to create safe sleeping environments for infants to toddlers, until they can express their temperature concerns to their parents," states Narda Simpson, mother of three. "The grobag egg™ digital thermometer is just one step in creating safe sleep for infants."
Maintaining the temperature in a baby's bedroom is an important factor in reducing the risk of SIDS.
A recent study released by the University of Calgary, Faculty of Medicine, published in the June issue of the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, confirms that an increased room temperature is one factor in causing overheating of newborns, affecting a baby's breathing pattern.
Unlike other room thermometers, the grobag egg™ allows parents to easily see if the temperature is appropriate by its color. The color changes with the temperature in the room. A natural yellow glow suggests a comfortable temperature for children to sleep in, while a blue glow suggests it's too cold and a red glow suggests it's too hot. The colors act as a call to action for parents to cool or heat the room, or to modify the baby's clothing or grobag® sleeping bag.
Room temperature is vital in creating a safe sleep environment for a baby and should be maintained at 16-20(C to help reduce the risk of SIDS. To learn more about the grobag egg and creating safe sleeping environments for babies, visit www.oyaco.com.

Actress Jessica Lange Joins Save the Children to Ensure Children Receive Basic Health Care
Actress Jessica Lange is Save the Children's newest Ambassador and the spokesperson for the humanitarian organization's annual "State of the World's Mothers" report, to be released on May 6, 2008. The report finds more than 200 million children under age 5 do not get basic health care when they need it, and that many lives could be saved by training local community health workers in remote and underserved areas.
"When your child gets sick with a common illness in the United States, you go to the doctor or pick up medicine at the local drug store," said the Academy Award-winning actress and mother of three. "But that's not the reality for millions of mothers in the poorest countries and communities around the world, where nearly 10 million children under 5 die every year.
"Last month, I traveled with Save the Children to Ethiopia, where 4 out of 5 children do not receive basic health measures," said Lange. "The good news is that Ethiopia is taking aggressive steps to reduce its child death rate through a community health worker program. In remote villages like Awassa, I met mothers whose babies are alive today because they got the advice and life-saving medicines they needed through this program."

New Blog by Dr. Robert C. Titzer, www.teachyourbaby.com, Reveals the Science and the Secrets Behind Teaching Babies to ReadHighlighted Links
Television news segments have recently showcased babies under the age of two with remarkable reading abilities. Not only is this natural, it is an essential part of development, says Dr. Robert C. Titzer, an expert on infant research and author of the prestigious new blog, www.teachyourbaby.com.
For over a decade, Dr. Titzer has been teaching babies all over the world to read. Now, through his weekly postings on www.teachyourbaby.com, he reveals the science and secrets behind his proven methods, including what he calls "multi-sensory learning," a key component of early learning. "Multi-sensory learning employs as many of the baby's sensory systems as possible while they are experiencing the world around them. This includes looking, touching, listening, moving and tasting," says Dr. Titzer. "These methods have been used to teach babies as young as nine months to read."
On www.teachyourbaby.com, Dr. Titzer offers engaging commentary on everything from his television appearances as an expert infant researcher, to parental questions and concerns, to utilizing multi-sensory learning techniques in the home, to the many benefits of early reading skills and much more. Dr. Titzer's recent television appearances range from Fox News to Scottish TV.
Dr. Titzer started teaching his own daughter Aleka to read when she was nine months old. By the age of four, she was reading at an 11th grade level. Dr. Titzer says the current practice of teaching reading skills starting at school age is too late. "Each child has only one natural window for learning language -- from about birth to about age four. During this period it is easier for them to learn any type of language including spoken, receptive, foreign and written."
Numerous infant studies prove that the earlier a child learns to read, the better he or she performs in school and later in life. Early readers have more self-esteem and are more likely to stay in school. According to a national panel of reading specialists and educators, most of the nation's reading problems could be eliminated if children began reading earlier.
Visit Dr. Titzer on www.teachyourbaby.com to read more about his work, dedication to early learning and the myriad success stories behind today's headlines.

Snugfits Debuts Modern Collection of Cool Baby Tees and Onesies
Newly introduced Snugfits is a unique line of modern baby onesies and cool tees with bold messages of love, laughter, wit, cultural pride, political affiliation and special interest. Founder and designer Sara Reider has taken her knack for graphic design and typography online with the launch of http://www.snugfits.com, creating designer apparel for babies and toddlers that is expressive, both in thought and design. Reider offers a wide selection of onesies, shirts, hats and pants that can be customized to suit shoppers' preferences in fabric color, ink color, sleeve length and size (preemie up to 18-24 months).
"The dream of opening Snugfits began shortly after the birth of my first son, Gavin," states Reider. "My design philosophy is all about simplicity and modernism. It encompasses strong statements that are tastefully edgy, hopelessly cute, downright hilarious and even a little controversial. There is something for everyone."
What sets Reider apart is that her merchandise can't be bought at the local Wal-Mart or Target. With more than 250 designs that express meaningful thoughts and entertaining messages, she offers more designs and color options than any brick and mortar retailer could stock. Snugfits meets the needs of a growing number of parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and friends of the family who are looking for unique apparel that expresses the personality of the special children in their lives. In developing her business and contemporary, well designed products, Reider subscribes to the concepts of Gordon Segal, the founder of Crate & Barrel: "...because there are fewer different stores and more homogeneity in retail today, uniqueness is more highly prized. If you can develop a unique design—something visually or mechanically clever, or something beautiful—you have greater opportunity...".
Snugfits are made from 100% cotton that has been pre-washed for minimal shrinkage. No harmful stain resistant or flame retardant chemicals are used. Some design examples are "I am the future," "still breastfeeding," "natural immunity," "Time to repress another memory" and "organic baby." There are also creative collections just for twins, triplets and preemies. Snugfits will continue to introduce new styles and designs to their line as fresh ideas grow and old ones are rejuvenated. There are also plans to create additional lines for older kids and expecting moms beginning next year.
In addition to clean, contemporary fashion, Snugfits aims to provide support to new parents. Reider, along with husband Brett, has created her own parenting blog - designed to share down to earth thoughts, tips and stories...anything having to do with being a parent.

"Our youngest son, Cory, was born March 23rd, this year's Easter Sunday. We had a double celebration that day. Our oldest son, Robert III, was born June 15th - Father's Day. Robby's birth was my best-ever Father's Day present. And, knowing how important that day will be to all new dads (and moms, of course), we decided to help them share their exciting news," said Stork Avenue CEO Bob Hunter.
The special collection can be viewed at StorkAvenue.com/FathersDaySpecial and will be available at 12:01 a.m. on June 15, 2008 to announce children born between 12:01 a.m. - 11:59 p.m. on June 15, 2008. After the first 100 orders are placed, the cards will cost $1.00 each.
